I recently finished my dissertation entitled From Literacy to Literacies: Negotiating Multiple Literacies in the English Classroom. So as the title goes, I am interested in how to infuse new literacies afforded (and required) by emerging technology into the high school English classroom, with a curriculum that is dominated by print literacy.
My dissertation research was situated in a 1:1 iPad environment, but that is no longer my teaching context. I now teach at a different suburban high school that is going in the 1:1 direction in the near future (January 2017). This time, I will not be as involved in the initial set up of the initiative. I am still interested in how emerging technology will impact my teaching, and my students’ learning.
Some specific questions I have been considering:
- How and what do students write in various digital environments?
- What are students’ attitudes and perceptions of writing in digital environments?
- How can an English teacher honor and teach traditional notions of writing while incorporating more multimodal composing into the classroom?
